Multistory
Amenity rich, carbon poor

Our high impact, low carbon refurbishment of the ground and lower ground floors of 2 Colmore Square and Cannon House creates a workplace for the future and Birmingham’s largest office amenity space.

The workplace as an experience and a catalyst for innovation is becoming a prerequisite for commercial tenants. Our challenge was to reconfigure the ground and lower ground floors of two 1960s office blocks to create sustainable, inspirational spaces. Our redevelopment focuses on creating best-in-class spaces through a mix of open-plan collaborative areas, rejuvenated entrances, and enhanced reception experiences.

At the heart of the refurbishment lies the Central Assembly, a unique outdoor social and events space, alongside a welcoming seminar room designed for both formal and informal gatherings. The innovative Ribbon unites the building’s two entrances through an elegant timber feature wall, providing wayfinding elements and interactive displays while harmonizing with the building’s raw concrete aesthetic.

Further improvements include a revitalized Colmore Square reception, where a bold architectural statement—a newly created void—connects the ground and lower ground levels through a striking metal stair and balustrade. This focal point reinforces openness and connectivity, a theme reflected throughout the reconfigured ground floor.

The refurbishment embraces a light-touch approach, maximizing the reuse of existing materials while introducing thoughtful design elements that enhance sustainability. Exposed concrete surfaces celebrate the building’s industrial heritage, complemented by softer materials and innovative textile applications.

Prioritizing occupant wellbeing and achieving 2*Fitwell accreditation, the refurbishment provides first-class changing facilities, shower rooms, and storage solutions, supporting an active lifestyle for tenants.
