Midland Metropolitan Learning Campus

Employment, education, and agency

Commissioned by Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust and supported by Sandwell Council through the Government’s Towns Fund, the campus is designed as a civic anchor for long-term neighbourhood regeneration in one of England’s most deprived communities.

The opening of the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital presented a defining opportunity. A major NHS capital investment of this scale inevitably generates substantial, sustained workforce demand across health professions. Without deliberate action, however, that demand could have been met through recruitment from outside the local community, leaving existing residents without access to the jobs and career pathways that the hospital’s arrival might otherwise unlock.

By addressing employment, education, and agency, the Learning Campus responds to clearly evidenced community need and turns the arrival of a major NHS facility into a lasting engine for neighbourhood health creation.

The design supports the building’s mission. A welcoming atrium, flexible teaching suites, and simulation wards positioned beside real clinical environments reduce both the psychological and physical distance between community members and the healthcare profession. The building’s spatial logic is explicit: views from the Learning Campus focus on the hospital, making aspiration visible and tangible — a reminder that if you can see it, you can be it.
