The Glasgow Academy

A vision of health

A landmark sports, music, and wellness centre to meet the current and future needs of students, and the wider community of Kelvinside.

The Glasgow Academy is immensely proud of its sporting and musical traditions; empowering children and offering the widest possible range of ways to stay physically and mentally healthy. But its facilities are increasingly unfit for purpose, and reimagination and development is now crucial.

This £20m development will bring a state-of-the-art swimming pool, sports hall, music practice and rehearsal, café, and active learning spaces under one, new roof.

Additional facilities to support health and wellbeing more broadly, will include safe social areas, catering facilities, pastoral meeting rooms, flexible learning spaces, quiet zones, and nurture rooms.

An outdoor multi-use games area will create opportunities to play multiple sports including rugby, hockey, football, and tennis.

The new building will sit next to the current main school building on the iconic Great Western Road. A new public entrance will be made through the Category B memorial wall that separates the campus from the road to create wider awareness of the school and encourage people in.

Removal of the existing barrier buildings means the campus will be better connected to the surrounding woodland. And new links between the school and the River Kelvin will be made with the introduction of accessible covered and uncovered outdoor spaces for learning, growing, dining and play.

Staff vehicle parking will go altogether; everyone will be encouraged to use public transport or to cycle to and from the campus.

The new facility will be game-changing for the local community, offering local groups the opportunity to use the sports and arts facilities for free and on a regular basis, ensuring they can experience and benefit from the facilities in a meaningful and long-lasting way.
