Le Gros Clark
Realising potential

Breathing new life and improved thermal performance into an existing building for University of Oxford

The refurbishment of Le Gros Clark will allow staff from different departments to come together under one roof, to engage and collaborate. It caters to the needs of all users, with a focus on well-planned spaces for both teaching and working.
The creative reuse of the building also responds to its historic setting, respecting the Grade 1 Listed Pitt Rivers Museum elevation and the surrounding Conservation Area.

We worked closely as a framework team, and with other project consultants and users, to develop designs that retain the existing historic exterior of the building and transform the interior into a modern, welcoming and flexible environment that improves the wellbeing of all.
The design takes into consideration the diverse student body, staff and visitors to the building regardless of age, gender, capacities or cultural background. The resulting layout ensures easy access for everyone.

Le Gros Clark is targeting EnerPHit, the Passivhaus standard for refurbishment projects. The achievement will be a first for Oxford University and will make a significant contribution towards the university meeting its 2030 net zero target.
We have designed the building to limit overheating through passive means, like natural ventilation and solar shading. This allows us to remove the existing air conditioning plant from the courtyard, saving energy and providing an attractive, collaborative and social space for the departments.

As well as providing advice and support, the team have also listened to evolving stakeholder requirements and found creative ways to realise those needs and present key findings to key decision-makers to progress the project.
