Conservation & Creative Re-use\

Respecting our built heritage and realising its potential

Conservation is about prolonging the life of our historic buildings, retaining their essence and meaning, not preserving them in aspic.

We integrate conservation approaches with contemporary economic, environmental and social goals - and follow internationally recognised charters and guidelines - to deliver creative solutions that unlock the full potential of a project. Our service goes way beyond protecting existing buildings, to achieve your objectives, mitigate risk and add value to your heritage asset.

Our conservation and re-use team, led by registered RIBA conservation architect Jason Martin, is an integral part of the life and work of our studio, not isolated in some (old) ivory tower. We appreciate historic and contemporary architecture equally and our designs marry the best of both worlds in a sensitive and innovative way.

We have the knowledge, skills and track record to achieve listed building and planning consent on highly challenging projects, achieving better outcomes, more efficiently.

Our expertise includes:

  • Sensitive adaptation and extension of heritage assets, including listed buildings
  • Creative re-use of 19th and 20th century buildings
  • Estate optimisation and consolidation of civic buildings
  • Public realm design within conservation areas

It takes creativity and ingenuity to change the requirements of a building’s many owners and users over time, while upholding its artistic, social and historic values.
