Reimagination of a 1970s Brutalist building

The retrofit seeks to re-imagine the 1970s Brutalist building inside and out, as a functional space for the University of Reading's occupants and as a welcoming hub for visitors and public events.

A significant investment from the University will see the refurbishment of the existing home of the School of Construction Management and Engineering (also known as the ‘Lego building’) on Whiteknights campus.

Students will experience state-of-the art teaching, research and learning facilities. The building will be open-plan, with a variety of modern collaborative working spaces, providing a creative hub for innovative thinking for design-related activities within the university. The proposal will celebrate the building’s unique structure and heritage whilst also reflecting the University’s commitment to sustainable design.

Once complete, the building will provide a home for the newly launched School of Architecture alongside the established School of Construction Management and Engineering as well as the Department of Art and the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication.
