The purpose-designed Student Centre for the University of Portsmouth provides the students with bars, venues, retail and catering facilities, together with student administration and welfare accommodation – what the Students’ Union calls a ‘resort without hotel bedrooms’.
As well as 3000 sqm of new building the project incorporates the refurbishment of an existing Victorian house, and the landscaping of a wider context within Ravelin Park.
The building is sensitively located adjacent to the Frewin Library and a number of residential areas. Stringent acoustic control measures have been incorporated into the building fabric including displacement ventilation with adiabatic cooling to the venue space.
We worked with artist Martin Richman on several interventions including an eye-catching lightbox on the roof of the main building.
“...It is a chameleon building....it displays mixed-use at its best with the functions complementing and co-ordinating with one another. This well-executed, even joyful, building gives a sense of identity to the campus...”
