Hammerson commissioned us to collaborate with a group of high profile architects on Sevenstone, a major new retail quarter in the centre of Sheffield.
We worked with seven of the leading design practices in the UK, including Foreign Office Architects, Acme, AHMM and O'Donnell Tuomey, to design individual blocks brought together in a masterplan by BDP. The scheme reintroduced pedestrian routes on three levels with John Lewis as an anchor store to revitalise this part of the city.
We developed designs for a new-build retail building and a refurbished mixed-use building containing apartments. The final design 'sampled' patterns from the rich tile and brick facades of the surrounding Victorian context, acting as both a showcase for high end retail brands and a good neighbour to Sheffield's built heritage. As part of this, we invited Sheffield artist Sarah Staton to collaborate with us as both 'critical friend' and to develop artwork integrated into the facade.
