One of the UK’s largest ecologies of innovation start-ups, knowledge-based research, business and high-tech advanced manufacturing fostered by Loughborough University and private industry partnerships.
The Loughborough Science and Enterprise Park illustrates Charnwood Borough Council’s vision to catalyse Loughborough’s knowledge economy. Loughborough University is a driving force in the knowledge economy of Leicestershire and the East Midlands and together with private industry leaders and the local authority form a partnership to deliver this centre for scientific and entrepreneurial excellence. Hawkins\Brown were commissioned to translate these aspirations into a physical framework for this 70 hectare regeneration site.
Our masterplan sets the agenda for research and innovation. The Park will have a national profile, building on the opportunity for high-tech knowledge-based research and development in partnership with the University and business leaders.
Set within the remarkable parkland setting of Charnwood Forest the masterplan preserves its landscape characteristics and creates a unique natural environment for thinking, reflecting, testing and making. The development’s scale, form and character respect the site’s topography with building clusters carefully set within the landscape structure of existing fields.
Retained parklands witin the masterplan provide a setting for meeting, encounter and experimentation between experts of different fields, bringing bright minds together in a ‘geography of innovation’.
The masterplan flexibly accommodates different types of development, including Innovation Centres, Grow-on Research and Advanced Manufacturing, taking into account possible future changes in market trends and delivery mechanisms.
of floor space across 70 hectares, the park has the same capacity as Apple’s new campus in Silicon Valley
The big picture
At a time when the housing crisis threatens to dominate the debate, we have turned our attention to the equally important aspect of work.
Technology is changing where we work, the way we interact, and how we produce value. The knowledge economy has already transformed our lifestyles and it is affecting how we organise our working environments.
Now more than ever in a post-referendum world, the UK needs to be positioned for productivity, entrepreneurialism and innovation to remain globally competitive. We have been helping a range of clients overcome those challenges using the tools of the masterplanner, urban designer and strategist to assist innovation and enterprise to flourish.
Once completed, the Loughborough Science and Enterprise Park, together with the adjacent Loughborough University campus, will be the UK’s largest contiguous knowledge and research campus
