Kingsway College \

We worked over five years with Metropolis and then Persimmon Homes to convert this complex, Grade II Listed group of buildings into houses, flats and studio spaces.

The external fabric of this former school has been restored to heritage standards while the interiors were imaginatively converted to use every part of each floor. Classrooms have been converted into flats by inserting highly engineered composite timber floors to create duplexes within a 5m high volume without compromising the double height sash windows. The whole building was fire engineered to enable the existing stairs and deep plan spaces to be reused as a rich mix of offices and studios.

The ground floor has been opened up to a public courtyard to provide independent business units and set within landscaped grounds. These unique spaces have attracted vibrant creative businesses like The Architecture Foundation and Magnum Photographic Agency. Other buildings within the Listed curtilage have been converted and supplemented by new contemporary insertions to create studios and residential spaces.

“What I liked about it was that a conventional house builder has taken on such an innovative and individualistic development. Mixing homes and offices is the way forward in City Living”
