Howe Green House School \

Something special on a budget

Howe Green House School is a small independent Junior and Early Years school near Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire. Since 2003 Hawkins\Brown have worked with the school on two projects, the Acorns Nursery and the Cedar Wall building, both within the setting of the Grade II Listed main house.

The Acorns Nursery, completed in 2006, is part conversion, part extension, and provides two nursery group spaces. The design is sensitive to the local aesthetic, whilst ensuring that extensive natural light and ventilation penetrate the building.

The second project, the ‘Cedar Wall building’, provides four new classrooms split equally over two levels.

Clad with Cedar Shingles weathering naturally over time and with an extensive sedum roof, the ‘Cedar Wall building’ offers diverse sustainable advantages, whilst providing the space and facilities necessary to meet the needs of the school.
