The merger of Barking and Dagenham boroughs left the question of what to do with two town halls.
Dagenham Civic Centre was modernised and made more accessible to the local community with an emphasis on attracting local businesses, which created additional revenue stream for the borough.
The Civic Centre, a Grade II* listed 1930s building, was architecturally the finer of the two, and so was lovingly restored with the help of Richard Griffiths’ Architects to reveal much of it’s original art deco glamour. Modern audio-visual equipment and upgrading of the main chamber provided much needed meeting and conference facilities for both the Council and wider local business community. Much of the refurbishment costs have been recouped through hiring out the building to film companies for location shots. See Batman Begins.
