Monier Road is a unique project for a special time and place; a stone’s throw from Here East and the Olympic Park, cool and connected.
Monier Road is a strategic site in the post Olympic story. The challenge is to develop a master plan that mediates between the network of streets and yards of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, and the expansive spaces on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, whilst providing sustainable residential and employment space.
The Big Idea
Monier Road West is a key piece of the post-olympic vision, creating a new model for warehouse living and working. The masterplan divides the site in two with a new pedestrian route and public space. Buildings are laid out to respect the existing street pattern, and build on the ‘yard’ typology, one of Fish Island’s distinct qualities. Designed around central yard spaces each block provides dual aspect apartments with good daylight and natural ventilation.
All in, the project provides 120 new-build mixed tenure flats, and 2000sqm of purpose built business space acting as an anchor to the new route crossing the site.
Working from the Inside Out
The duplex flats carefully align the living rooms and external private space to the south, with double and triple height spaces bringing drama and variety to a standard London house type. The flat layouts are designed with extra space to allow a range of lifestyles from totally open plan, warehouse feel to a more “nested”, private series of intimate spaces.
