Hawkins\Brown has designed a wide range of laboratory-type spaces, from Cambridge UTC-large new-build, super-labs for teaching 14-18 year olds - to the refurbishment of existing buildings for specialist postgraduate research at University College London and Oxford University. The principles remain the same: improve the interior and exterior environment which will lead to higher productivity from the research community; have an holistic approach; and create a 'social building' - modern science is an intrinsically social activity, with the most successful scientists collaborating across specialisms, sharing ideas, technologies, equipment and support.
