The #GREATSCHOOLS Round Table\

In collaboration with the AJ, we hosted a #GreatSchools round table in our London studio on Wednesday 29 April, providing real insight into understanding what school building in the current climate is like from various perspectives. As well as architects, this included funder clients, teaching staff, educationalists, and other design consultants.

As we know, there is much to be improved on. We specifically discussed what the role of architects should be and how can we use our expertise to advise local authorities and other education providers to make the best use of their estate. The big question was why the sector is so reliant on the political climate. The Conservative’s PSBP approach could not have been more different to the BSF one from the previous Labour Government. It was generally agreed more money is required to bolster available budgets to ensure we are providing long term solutions and not just a short term ‘make do and mend’ response.

We wait with anticipation the results of next Thursday’s election, but the conclusion that funding was unlikely to significantly increase whatever the outcome, means we have to work harder and be even more creative to ensure our children are provided with the best school buildings possible to support their learning. A full write up will be in the Architect’s Journal soon, so watch out for it!
