Last year we were approached by MIF to contribute to the exciting opening commission of the 2017 festival, “What is the City but the People?”, from an idea by Jeremy Deller. We worked alongside other consultants including set designers, directors, producers and event managers to develop the design for this unique event. The design of the catwalk responds to the existing building geometries, urban context and found items within Piccadilly Gardens whilst ensuring great visibility to show the performance and engage the audience.
“What is the City but the People?” showed on Thursday 29th June 2017 in Manchester’s square of the people - Piccadilly Gardens. Billed as “a celebration of Manchester, created by and starring The People of Manchester”, the commission featured a 100 metre long runway along which 150 people, representative of the city, paraded. The idea was simply to paint a modern portrait of the city using a wide range of individual characters. Performers were a diverse mix of people that were chosen to signify ‘Manchester’.
Hawkins\Brown are privileged to have been invited once again to contribute to the festival, an innovative and forward-thinking catalyst for art and culture in Manchester. Being a part of this “celebration of Manchester” – the great city where we have found our northern home – has been a brilliant experience, enjoyed by all involved.
